Ocular is made of 6mm Plexi glass, digitally fabricated using the laser cutting technology used exclusively on sheet based materials. This process essentially turns simple 2d components into a highly faceted structure as they are slotted together in a fast, easy manner.
Ocular is a family based on a parametric module this is capable of growing in space in a multitude of directions: vertically, or sideways along branching paths. The main component bifurcates into a twig-like form, creating hierarchical structural levels. This component determines the proportional properties of the overall structure: the angle of bifurcation determines the height of a single module whereas its length determines the module's width.
Ocular initially draws inspiration from the Venus Flower Basket, Euplectella, whose diagonal ribbing and hierarchical meshing give it the necessary structural strength to withstand the high pressures of deep ocean waters.
Ocular is a furniture line designed in different configurations based on a structural design concept. A script is developed to offer the system the flexibility to produce Ocular in different forms, sizes and materials. Ocular|Quad is entirely produced and assembled by the designer. Plywood is CNC-cut resulting in flatpack pieces, easy to transport and assemble into a lightweight and robust structure.
